Roles & Responsibilities
A Sub-Collector (also called Sub-Divisional Magistrate – SDM) is an IAS officer in charge of a Revenue Division within a district. This post is usually the first major field posting for IAS officers in Tamil Nadu.

- Acts as the head of a revenue division under the District Collector.
- Supervises the work of Tahsildars, Revenue Inspectors, and Village Administrative Officers (VAOs).
- Responsible for land administration, including land records, land revenue collection, and resolving land disputes.
- Conducts revenue inspections and ensures smooth functioning of revenue offices.
- Functions as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
- Maintains law and order in the division along with the police.
- Can impose Section 144 CrPC (prohibitory orders) during emergencies.
- Handles magisterial inquiries into law-and-order incidents, accidents, or custodial deaths.
- Oversees the implementation of government schemes at the divisional level.
- Monitors welfare programs (education, health, rural development, women empowerment, etc.).
- Reviews progress of infrastructure projects in the division.
- Plays a key role in disaster preparedness and relief (floods, cyclones, droughts, etc.).
- Coordinates with line departments for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations.
- Hears appeals and petitions in revenue cases (patta transfer, land disputes, tenancy issues, etc.).
- Exercises powers under various revenue and tenancy laws.
